This calf probably died at around three or four months gestation and remained inside her mother until about seven months. During the period between the calf's death and its delivery, its fluids were reabsorbed by the cow, to leave it in this reduced state. The body had only a slight odour and when left exposed to the air over a few hours, dried out to a dark leathery look.
